About Our Daily Bread - Soup Kitchen and Social Center
Location:
1730 Race Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202, US
Mission Statement
OUR VISION Every person in the Greater Cincinnati community has sufficient access to food, essential social services and a safe place of belonging. OUR MISSION To provide stability and hope to guests in need by offering meals, hospitality and services in a safe, respectful environment, located in Over the Rhine.
Description
Our Daily Bread is Cincinnati’s largest soup kitchen, open since 1985. We serve 300+ hot, nutritious, free meals five days a week to neighbors who do not have a safe way to store or cook food for themselves, primarily people experiencing homelessness. Our guests are encouraged to go through the lunch line as many times as they need to get their fill. We also distribute shelf-stable bagged meals for guests to have something to eat during evenings and weekends.
Our soup kitchen operates with the support of our community- 100% of the food we serve is donated or rescued, sparing thousands of pounds of usable food from landfills each year. We partner with many friends around Cincinnati to bring food through our doors, like bakeries, restaurants, and grocery stores that donate food they are unable to use; individuals who transport rescued food around the tristate; or youth who run canned food drives at their schools.
We host hundreds of volunteers each year who transport rescued food and prepare and serve meals to our guests. Each soup kitchen shift requires 10-15 volunteers, giving people from all walks of life an opportunity to truly connect with their neighbors.
In 2021, we served 160,076 meals using 228,972 pounds of rescued or donated food and 11,640 volunteer hours.
Our goal is simply to be the best hosts we can be to the people who need us, striving to honor the dignity, humanity and light in each of our guests.
