Mission Statement

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Description

There are many opportunities for volunteers! Two main areas of the ACS needing volunteers are Patient Services and Relay for Life.

Patient services of the American Cancer Society provide a wide range of emotional and practical support for patients, their families, their caregivers, and their communities from the time of diagnosis to the end of the cancer experience. A few of our programs include:

Reach to Recovery: Trained volunteers offer information and support to patients before, during, and after breast cancer treatment.

Look Good...Feel Better : The Look Good...Feel Better program is a free community-based national service that teaches female cancer patients beauty techniques to help restore their appearance and self-image during chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

I Can Cope : I Can Cope is an educational program for people facing cancer, either personally or as a caregiver. The program offers reliable information, peer support, and practical coping skills.

Road to Recovery: The American Cancer Society Road to Recovery program provides transportation to and from treatment for people who have cancer and do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves. Volunteer drivers donate their time and the use of their cars so that patients can receive the life-saving treatments they need.

Cancer Resource Center: The CRC is a place where patients, family members and caregivers can come to find the latest cancer information and local resources for wigs, support groups, prostheses and transportation to treatment. It is located in the Regional Cancer Center.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.

Together with millions of supporters, the American Cancer Society saves lives by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back. We depend on the dedication and talent of our more than 3 million Relay For Life volunteers who work with us to create a world with more birthdays.

No matter where you are, there's a place for you at Relay and you can make a difference today.

Thanks to Relay participants and volunteers, we are creating a world with more birthdays- a world where cancer can't claim another year of anyone's life.
