Shape Up NYC is a free citywide fitness program operated by NYC Parks, in partnership with Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield and NYC Service that provides more than 300 free group exercise classes each week at 175 locations across the five boroughs.
Want to help make your community healthier? Volunteer to be a fitness instructor for Shape Up NYC! Shape Up organizes free fitness classes across New York City, particularly in neighborhoods with high rates of obesity and diabetes.
We are looking for dedicated fitness instructors who would be willing to run classes in the NYC area. Volunteers must have some experience as a fitness instructor, and once accepted, will have the opportunity to shadow a current instructor before leading their own classes. This position offers flexibility and creativity for enthusiastic volunteers interested in giving back to their communities and addressing pressing health issues.
Purpose: Shape Up Volunteers are dedicated fitness instructors who teach group exercise classes in neighborhoods across all five boroughs, especially those with high rates of obesity and diabetes. They are interested in giving back to their communities and have an understanding of urban health issues, working with diverse populations, and community outreach.
Location: City-wide
Key Responsibilities: Conduct group fitness classes (safe/fun). Report attendance weekly.
Time Commitment: One hour, once a week. For a least 6 months.
Certification or Education Requirements:
Currently certified in fitness instruction by one or more of the following: ACE, ACSM, AFAA, NASM or any other accredited health and fitness certifying organization (i.e. Zumba, Pilates, Yoga, PiYo...)
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in the health field such as human performance, sports medicine, exercise physiology, kinesiology or other health related concentrations are a plus.
Required skills: Effective communication, fitness leadership, group instruction.

Description
Shape Up NYC is a free citywide fitness program launched in June of 2004 through a partnership between the New York City Parks Department and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOH) that targets neighborhoods with high rates of obesity and obesity-related disease.
Thanks to new partnerships with Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield and NYC Service, Shape Up NYC has embarked on a major expansion since 2010, and now offers more than 300 free fitness classes every week at 175 locations across the five boroughs, including parks, recreation centers, housing and health facilities, schools and community centers.
