Literacy Inc.'s (LINC) Reading Everywhere program hosts reading events at everyday venues, such as apartment lobbies, laundromats, restaurants, banks and local businesses, in order to make reading fun for children and model good reading behaviors.
As a Reading Advocate, you should be prepared to:
- Bring your favorite children’s book or choose a suggested book to read to a small group of children.
- Distribute donated books to children.
- Distribute reading logs and encourage children to track their leisure reading.
- Work on crafts and play some games.
This event is an opportunity for you to make connections with our staff and your fellow volunteers. You will also be able to witness our unique mission in action.

LINC inspires and enlists communities to create a better future for our children through early reading success. The simple but effective approach is grounded in three beliefs:
- All children will read well, given enough one-on-one support
- Every community has the strengths and resources to foster early reading success for its children, and
- Sustained, coordinated, community-based effort can activate literacy-neighborhoods that will provide this support.
As the catalyst for this effort, LINC cultivates collaborations and leverages community resources to provide expanded opportunities for children to read and, ultimately, to succeed. Whether in schools, parks, laundromats, hair salons, health centers, or libraries, indeed, wherever children are found, LINC supported programs are available.
Description
Children who become better readers are more likely to succeed in school and in our world. Literacy Inc. (LINC) helps children on their path to success by activating and organizing existing resources in the community to build strong readers.
Whether it is a reading corner at a shoe store, a family literacy night at the local library, or an animal themed reading celebration at a school, no other organization in New York City works the way LINC does to engage the entire community in reading.
It has been demonstrated that children who are strong readers become strong candidates for success. They can become leaders who have a positive impact by giving back to the communities from which they came and working to improve the lives of the next generation of readers and beyond.
LINC's work is the catalyst for a cycle of community development which begins by engaging its members in helping their children become better readers. When a child reads, a community succeeds.
