Conservation Programs Intern

(Part-time, unpaid)

Do you want an internship where you are a part of a team of energetic people? Where you are growing professionally while making a difference?

This is the internship for you! We offer mentorships, trainings, professional development, snacks, and more! We are proud to have one of the best internship programs in the environmental field today.

The Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter is a leader in the environmental movement and brings the slogan "think global, act local" to life in the Silicon Valley.

We are seeking diligent, motivated, and creative individuals to support our Conservation Teams. Our Conservation Committees set conservation policies for the Chapter, identify conservation priorities, and direct grassroots activities. Our eight most active Conservation Teams include:, Forest Protection, Fracking (new!), Climate Action, Sustainable Land Use, Transportation, Water Advocacy & Education, Open Space, and Zero Waste/Recycling. Conservation Interns will work closely with staff and volunteers to support conservation teams in the planning and implementation of their campaigns, research, and recruitment and engagement of new volunteers. Some of the campaigns that you could be working on: Fracking education and action, Community Choice energy campaign planning, Creek Cleanups and Conference Planning, or conducting an organics survey throughout our chapter

An ideal candidate...

  • Has or is pursuing an Environmental Studies or Science Bachelors or Masters Degree or has equivalent experience.
  • Available to come to our office in Palo Alto for at least 4 months, 8-12 hours a week, Monday-Friday, during business hours (some work can be done out of the office)
  • Available on the 4 th Monday of the month for Conservation Committee meetings in Palo Alto
  • Passion for sustainability and commitment to Sierra Club goals
  • Experience in campaign planning or community organizing
  • Has passion and the drive to take action on local environmental issues and uphold Sierra Club sustainability goals

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support Conservation Committees in 2014 campaign planning/goal setting
  • Help to recruit and engage new volunteers on conservation issue committees
  • Update Conservation Committee website
  • Help organize 4 local house parties and public presentations to recruit new members onto committees and increase community awareness about the issue(s) they are working on
  • Represent the Chapter at local events
  • Write articles, op-eds, and letters to the editor in local media sources

The Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter organizes outdoor recreation for people of all ages, advocates for policies that protect our natural environment, supports environmental candidates for public office, and provides opportunities for people who want to develop leadership skills to give back to the community and help the environment.
