Become a Docent!
Assist students in the class or on a field trip today!

Want to get more involved with your community and help educate 3rd-5th grade students about the importance of birds and wetlands? Become a docent for our Wetlands Discovery Program! In-class programs take place on Tuesday mornings at various schools around Santa Clara County, typically from about 8AM-12PM. Field trips are on Thursday and/or Friday mornings from about 9AM-12PM, and typically take place at the Palo Alto Baylands. Note: you do NOT need to attend every program!

We have two training sessions coming up:

In-Class Activities: Tuesday, March 6 from 10AM-12PM at McClellan Ranch in Cupertino (SCVAS Office)
During this training session, we will go over the posters students use to complete worksheets, how students should use the binoculars, as well as volunteer paperwork.

Field Trip: Thursday, March 8 from 10AM-12PM at the Palo Alto Baylands

During this session, we will learn about the different concepts we teach the students during the field trip while walking around the Palo Alto Baylands.

If you’re able to attend and/or have questions, please email Kelsey Frey, Education Programs Coordinator, at programs@scvas.org. It’s a lot of fun, and you’ll feel great about giving back - no background in science needed. We teach you everything you need to know!

Mission Statement

The Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society promotes the enjoyment, understanding, and protection of birds and other wildlife by engaging people of all ages in birding, education, and conservation.

Description

SCVAS was founded in 1926 and is a chapter of the National Audubon Society. Our membership is composed of nearly 4000 individuals throughout Santa Clara County. Our chapter regularly hosts birding fieldtrips and monthly general meetings and publishes our monthly newsletter, the Avocet. Our two main areas of concentration are education and conservation. SCVAS provides environmental education opportunities both in the classroom (hands-on activities, games, slide shows) and out in the field (wetlands and woodlands fieldtrips). Our conservation programs focus on environmental advocacy throughout the county and beyond.
