Employment Mentors work one-on-one with newly-arrived refugee or asylee individuals to help them prepare for their first job in the U.S and overcome barriers in the employment process. Responsibilities include providing mentees with job search support, job leads and job search skills training. Mentors draw from their own job search and work experiences and receive regular support and materials from the IRC employment team. A commitment of 2 hours per week for 3-5 months is requested.

Essential Position Functions:

  • Assist refugee or asylee in identifying job opportunities and businesses related to the client’s professional field, share resources, provide networking guidance, and facilitate industry-related discussions.
  • Provide orientation to the American work place.
  • Provide support throughout job search, placement process, and post-placement.
  • Maintain regular contact with employment team to communicate activities and progress.
  • Make telephone calls to refugees or asylees and potential employers as needed.

Requirements:

  • Ability to meet and interact with refugee/asylee mentee on a regular basis.
  • A higher education degree is preferred but not required.
  • Employment and job search experience
  • Willingness to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies

Time Commitment:

  • Mentors must commit to a minimum of two hours per week for 3- 5 months. Mentors will meet with refugees/asylees based on their individual schedules.

Description

Established in July 1999, IRC-Baltimore resettles approximately 700 refugees of all ages and from over 20 nations out of our Southeast Baltimore office each year. Our mission is to help newly arrived refugees become independent and self-supportive by assisting them with services such as temporary financial assistance, job placement, cultural and community orientation, and referrals for English language study, health, education and social services.
