  • Families Forward Philadelphia's Department of Education needs volunteers to assist children in our Family Residence to achieve educational goals in our Reading Rescue Program.
  • Volunteers will be essential in aiding children with literacy enrichment. We welcome volunteers from local universities, organizations and churches. Volunteers assist students in grades k-8 at our literacy stations developed by the Education Department Staff. Volunteers will help enforce basic math, literacy, and writing skills, which are all subject areas our children tend to struggle with.
  • Volunteers should have a willingness to work with children in a busy environment, excellent people skills, and an enthusiasm for helping others! Kindergarten - Twelfth grades.
  • Come share your reading and math skills and help end the cycle of homelessness!

Mission Statement

The mission of Families Forward Philadelphia (FFP) is to help homeless families become healthy, productive, and self-reliant.

Description

Families Forward Philadelphia has emerged from - and revitalized - the legacy of the Travelers Aid Society of Philadelphia, which began in 1901, and was incorporated in 1915 to "provide information, advice, guidance and shelter to travelers" most of whom were new immigrants. We extended our mission during the Depression era to include housing and assistance to unemployed persons throughout Philadelphia and, in the 1990s; we developed a suite of modern programs to address homelessness and poverty. Today, we continue this legacy by engaging over 90,000 travelers at Amtrak's 30th Street Station annually all while continuing to help homeless familes at our facility reach their future goals.

Families Forward Philadelphia (Families Forward) helps homeless families with emergency shelter, transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, intensive case management, counseling for everyone in the family, on-site access to health and dental care, and educational programming for the adults, children and teens in our care. We are the largest shelter in Philadelphia that houses the entire family, keeping children and parents together in a safe, warm and welcoming environment during a very stressful time. We accept men and teen boys, who are often not allowed in other shelters. Families Forward offers a pathway out of poverty and homelessness in Philadelphia, with our family shelter capacity of 69 rooms, operating 24/7, and 80 housing units throughout West Philly, serving an average of 300 families annually, including over 500 children.
