Can you spare an hour a week to mentor middle school students and expose them to all the joys of Science and Engineering? Starting in November, a nonprofit called iPRAXIS brings volunteers to Belmont Charter School in West Philadelpia once a week for 13 weeks to work with students during their Science class on Science Fair projects.

These volunteers, called Scienteers for science volunteer, have problem solving skills and range from students at local universities to medical researchers to SEPTA employees to retired teachers. Each volunteer wants to share their expertise and problem solving skills with middle school students and provide them with the ability to follow the steps of the Scientific Method to create a project.

We meet 13 times between Nov 3rd to Feb 10th due to the holidays.

Available times are:

6th grade, Tuesdays from either 8:10-9:42, 9:44-11:16, or 1:39-3:11

7th grade, Mondays from either 8:57-9:42, 12:05-1:15, or 1:39-2:50

8th grade, Tuesdays from either 8:57-9:42, 12:05-1:15, or 1:39-2:50

Belmont is located in West Philadelphia and accessible from University City by the 40 Bus or 10 trolley and from Temple/Center City by the Broad Street Line to the 43 Bus or 10 trolley.

It takes less than an hour a week as you help guide a group of students through their science fair projects. A little over an hour that can change a child’s life!
