Department: Construction

Job Description: Under the direction of the Construction Manager, Crew Leaders will lead groups of three to five volunteers; attend HFH-MC trainings to learn new construction skills; make a minimum commitment of at least one day per month, for six months. Becoming a Crew Leader makes you a vital part of HFH-MC’s mission while developing your own leadership and construction skills. On the job site you will be instantly identifiable as a Crew Leader. Other volunteers will recognize that you have the know-how and look to you for advice and leadership! Make a difference in the life of a new homeowner and work side by side with a dynamic and powerful group of volunteers. HFH-MC provides you with on-the-job construction training and skills. Additionally, you will be eligible to sign up for Crew Leader Only build days and will receive priority scheduling.

Type of Work: Crew Leaders are needed for three main areas: 1. New home build and renovation/rehab construction, 2. Deconstruction and salvage jobs, and 3. Weatherization and home energy improvements. If you would like to work in a specific area, please designate that in the email.

Time Commitment: Minimum one day per month (7.30am - 3.30pm / Wednesday - Saturday) for at least six months. A more frequent commitment is preferred. Saturday Crew Leader slots are our most difficult area of recruitment.

Position Requirements: 1. Construction experience is preferred but not required; 2. If no previous construction experience, a strong desire to learn new skills is a must; 3. Knowledge of common construction tools and techniques or a desire to learn; 4. Volunteer and/or leading volunteers experience is a plus; 5. Experience working with and/or a desire to work with people from various backgrounds; 6. Reliability, punctuality and strong interpersonal skills; 7. Attention to detail; 8. Ability to not only guide and train unskilled volunteers, but to step back and allow volunteers to execute tasks; 9. Interest in and knowledge of HFH-MC’s mission; 10. Flexibility and a good sense of humor.

Training and Resources: HFH-MC Construction, Volunteer and Family Services as well as senior Crew Leaders will orient and provide assistance on building as well as volunteer management and interaction.

Mission Statement

In a spirit of collaboration and fellowship, Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland, works with individuals, institutions, businesses, and the Habitat families themselves to build simple, decent, affordable housing for those living in substandard conditions in our community.

Description

Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland, Inc. - Our Programs and Services

Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland, Inc. is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, which is headquartered in Americus Georgia. We seek to eliminate substandard housing by providing a hand up rather than a handout to help families to realize the dream of homeownership.

Habitat invites people of all backgrounds, races, and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need.

The need for Habitat in Montgomery and Prince George's Counties is real. The median value of a home in Montgomery County was $469,900 between 2007 and 2011. In parts of Prince George's county, up to 92% of renters are cost burdened.

As a private nonprofit organization Habitat for Humanity operates solely on donations of time, materials and money. Houses are sold to partner families at no profit, with no interest. Homeowners and volunteers build the homes together under trained supervision.

We are now accepting donations of new or used building materials, home furnishings and appliances for our Habitat ReStores. Call the Habitat ReStore donation hotline 301-947-3304 to find out about making your tax deductible donation.

Help make the dream of homeownership possible for deserving Montgomery and Prince George's County families- become a Habitat volunteer today!
