Using the physical properties of water, physical/occupationaltherapists work to improve independent function. Exercise in water can be used to strengthen weak muscles, relax tight muscles, and improve body awareness, coordination, respiration, oral-motor control, and functional communication. Children with sensory-processing impairments experience a calming, organizing effect from exercise in water. Children undergoing orthopedic surgery have a quicker return of movement and function when exercising with the support of water.
