Literacy Mentor for Struggling Young Reader - 1 hour/week (Goodwin, Charleston SC)

ORGANIZATION: Reading Partners

Now recruiting for the 2012-2013 school year! Tutoring will start again in late August/early September 2012. We encourage interested volunteers to sign up, as we will be emailing reminders and updates to potential tutors over the summer.

A child's third grade reading scores can predict with 70% accuracy the likelihood they will graduate from high school. Early literacy impacts all aspects of a child's life from academic performance across subject areas to self-confidence and enthusiasm for learning.

88% of young people from low-income communities cannot read at grade level. As a Book Buddy, the power of your one-on-one attention and caring can make an incredible difference.

Reading Partners and Charleston Volunteers for Literacy provide an opportunity and a space for volunteers from the community to give a fraction of their time each week to tutor an elementary school student one-on-one in reading using a structured and easy-to-follow curriculum.

With just 1 hour a week, you can make a huge difference in the lives of children who have fallen behind in reading and are at risk of falling further. One-on-one instruction at the student's reading level provides the opportunity for individualized academic attention and a healthy learning relationship with you, the volunteer. Volunteers are, in turn, supported at all times by school site coordinators and staff.

Charleston Volunteers for Literacy has centers at elementary schools throughout Charleston, including:
- Burns Elementary School --- 3750 Dorchester Road (North Charleston)
- Chicora Elementary School --- 1912 Success St (North Charleston)
- James Simons Elementary School --- 2685 Leeds Ave (North Charleston)

Mission Statement

Our mission is to help children become lifelong readers by empowering communities to provide individualized instruction with measurable results.

Description

Reading Partners is a national education nonprofit that partners with students, their families, schools, and communities to provide students with individualized literacy support and the foundational skills they need to read at grade level by fourth grade. We do this by training community volunteers to deliver one-on-one, literacy lessons, using our structured and easy to follow, evidence-based curriculum. Volunteer tutoring happens in-person via our Reading Partners Traditional program and virtually via our Reading Partners Connects program. Programming varies by region. We currently serve twelve regions, nationwide: Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, Denver, North Texas, Tulsa, Twin Cities, South Carolina, Washington DC, Baltimore, and New York.
