Mission Statement

Our Mission:

The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, scientific, and educational organization dedicated to helping individuals with dyslexia, their families and the communities that support them. The IDA actively promotes informed and effective teaching approaches, methods, and strategies that are implemented as intended with fidelity to design.

We believe that all individuals have the right to achieve their potential, that individual learning abilities can be strengthened and that social, educational and cultural barriers to language acquisition and use must be removed.

IDA supports and encourages interdisciplinary research, seeks to facilitate the exploration of the causes for and early identification of disorders that place children at risk for reading failure, and is committed to the responsible dissemination of research-based knowledge.

Our Purpose:

The purpose of IDA is to pursue and provide the most comprehensive range of information and services that address the full scope of dyslexia and related difficulties in learning to read and write -- In a way that creates hope, possibility, and partnership -- So that every individual has the opportunity to lead a productive and fulfilling life, and society benefits from the resource that is liberated.

Our branch serves the state of Oregon and the southwest Washington counties of Pacific, Wahkiakum, Cowlitz, Clark, Skamania and Klickitat.

Description

The Oregon Branch, also known as ORBIDA, became a chartered branch of IDA in 1976. We are one of 47 branches of IDA (45 in the US, 2 in Canada).

We promote literacy through research, education, and advocacy.

We provide information and referral services to both members and non-members, conduct various teacher training and other programs each year, including an annual conference, and activities in support of National Dyslexia Awareness Month in October.

Our website contains information about our branch, its history, members of the board of directors, and much more including links to both the international headquarters and our other branches.

We are all volunteers and always need interested and qualified individuals for our board of directors and committees. We are especially in need of a qualified bookkeeper or accountant who would be willing to serve a 2-year term on our board effective immediately.
