Provide cultural learning and enrichment to your Charlottesville neighbors by volunteering your time and skills at the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of U.Va., the only museum of Indigenous Australian art in the U.S.! Volunteering at the Kluge-Ruhe Collection is an opportunity to connect with the world beyond Charlottesville - all the way to Australia!

There are three ways to help at Kluge-Ruhe:

  • Docents prepare and give tours to the public about the museum's rotating exhibitions of Indigenous Australian art.
  • Educational Guides provide support for the museum's various free educational programs for children and families.
  • Gallery Attendants greet museum visitors, introduce current exhibitions, and answer questions.
Each volunteer role offers a unique opportunity to learn about Aboriginal art and share your knowledge and skills with the community.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to advance knowledge and understanding of Australia’s Indigenous people and their art and culture worldwide. Working with living artists, international scholars and arts professionals, we provide a wide range of learning experiences to the University community and the public through exhibition, research and educational programs.

Description

The Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia is the only museum in the United States dedicated to the exhibition and study of Australian Aboriginal art, and the most significant collection outside Australia. The museum is free and open to the public.

We offer a comprehesive variety of programming, from lectures by visiting artists and scholars, film screenings, academic seminars, children's programs and other events. Our artist residency program, which brings Aboriginal artists from Australia to Charlottesville, enhances and enriches our local community with its exhibitions, gallery walk-and-talks, and engagement with social and human rights issues.
