Relay For Life of Greece

The Relay For Life of Greece is recruiting for the 2015 Planning Committee, and you are invited to join us!

What is Relay For Life? Relay For Life is a community walk that takes place each spring/summer to benefit the American Cancer Society and raise cancer awareness in our community. Just about everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer, and the members of the Planning Committee volunteer their time to help organize and host the Relay For Life event each year, making the event a memorable, inspirational, and exciting moment for all participants who attend!

What does the Planning Committee do? The Planning Committee helps to organize the annual Relay For Life event - assisting with such aspects as marketing, team development, sponsorships, Survivorship, logistics, entertainment, activities, ceremonies, food and hospitality, youth recruitment, and more!

When does the committee meet? The Planning Committee meets once per month until our annual event in June. There are also other volunteer opportunities to help sit at tables, pass out information, network with local business owners, and more!

What is the commitment? All Planning Committee members are asked to attend only one monthly meeting (lasting about 60- 90 minutes) to discuss committee progress, tasks, and goals. Planning Committee members are able to dedicate as much or as little time as possible. If you have a busy schedule and would like to help out when you can squeeze it in, try our Sponsorships sub-committee. Sponsorship sub-committee members contact local businesses when they have time to see if they would be interested in sponsoring our event each year. If you have lots of time to spare, think about helping with our Team Development sub-committee, keeping in touch with participants to keep them up to date with what our Relay For Life is doing, and thank them for their time and fundraising efforts. There’s a role for everyone, and it’s easy to fit into your schedule!

How can you learn more? Email Jillian Ference at GreeceRelay@gmail.com to request a committee brochure and see a list of all the different sub-committees you can help with!

This past year, the Relay For Life of Greece raised over $65,000 to benefit the American Cancer Society! It is because of our Planning Committee volunteers that this is possible! Join us - and become a part of a truly amazing experience you will never forget!

Mission Statement

To eliminate cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and patient services.

Description

Relay For Life offers everyone in the community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length. Relay For Life is a life-changing event that brings together more than 3.5 million people to:

  • Celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer.
  • Remember loved ones lost to the disease.
  • Fight Back! We relay because we have been touched by cancer and desperately want to put an end to the disease.

One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. The funds raised at Relay save lives by funding cutting-edge cancer research, early detection and prevention education, advocacy efforts, and life-affirming patient services. It is because of your involvement that we are able to save lives, help those battling cancer, and empower all to fight back against the disease.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.

Dedicated volunteers are committed to fighting cancer in their communities year-round, but once a year, they gather at Relay For Life to celebrate Survivors and caregivers, remember loved ones lost and to gain inspiration for the fight.

Each of the more than 5,200 Relays nationwide is a fun-filled, overnight event that mobilizes communities to celebrate Survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), remember loved ones and raise money for the fight against cancer. Teams of eight to 15 members gather with tents and sleeping bags with the goal of keeping on person on the track at all times. Relay For Life brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, teachers, churches... people from all walks of life. Teams seek sponsorship prior to the Relay, all with the goal of eliminating cancer.

Relay For Life opens as cancer Survivors take the first lap. This emotional time sets the stage for the importance of each participant's contribution.

A festive atmosphere always develops as participants make new friends and spend time with old ones. Highlighting the evening is a luminaria Ceremony of Hope held after dark to honor cancer Survivors and to remember loved ones lost to cancer. The luminaria candles line the track and are left burning throughout the night to remind participants of the incredible importance of their contributions.

Participants show their dedication and motivation to fighting cancer by staying throughout the entire night and taking a final lap together during the Fight Back Ceremony. It is during this final lap that people remember why they have come to Relay For Life and think about how they can continue to help fight cancer throughout the rest of the year.

Join us in the fight against cancer!
