The Strategic Communications Intern will mobilize manage hundreds of online activists to emphatically challenge misrepresentations of Islam and Muslims on the Internet.

Responsibilities:

  • Consistently compile empirical research by credible sources on topics related to Islam and Muslims
  • Compile talking points to use to respond to specific popularly-held misconceptions about Islam and Muslims
  • Contact activists weekly to correct misrepresentations using accurate, strategically phrased information

Requirements:

  • Possess excellent written, verbal persuasive communication skills
  • Possess sophisticated understanding of Americans' attitudes and values, based on surveys and research findings
  • Possess strong logical reasoning skills
  • Submit a portfolio with a minimum three (3) works of no more than 1 page each, illustrating previous experience, skills, interest, and perspective
  • Knowledgeable in the principles of research
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team and under very strict time constraints
  • Highly motivated to correct popular perceptions of Islam and Muslim
  • Considerable experience with Microsoft Office products, especially Word and Excel, as well as experience using Google Applications such as Gmail, Google Docs
  • A strong interest in, and familiarity with, online and print news media, especially concerning stories and issues related to Islam and Muslims.

Time commitment: A minimum six month, 20 hours per week commitment is required. Internship hours must be completed in the office, within the hours of 8:30am and 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.

Office location: Our physical office (different from our mailing address) is very conveniently located near downtown Seattle just two blocks east of Metro's International District Tunnel Station. Any bus that goes to downtown Seattle from across the Puget Sound region can drop you off within 2 blocks of our office.

C AIR-Washington the local Washington state chapter of CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) serving the neighboring Northwest. CAIR is the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy group. CAIR-Washington is a not-for-profit organization registered in Washington. Though it leverages the resources, expertise, and knowledge base of CAIR (based in Washington D.C.), it functions as an independent organization that sets its own strategy and goals.
