Tutorsprovide one-on-one assistance to a student who is learning English or preparing for the GED or COMPASS test. Tutors help students understand basic reading, writing, grammatical, or math concepts and provide opportunities to practice the skills they are learning in class. Tutors work with students to develop activities that are relevant to the students’ needs and goals. Tutors generally meet with a student twice a week.

Our ESL students range from pre-literate in their own language and/or English to near-native speakers hoping to hone their academic and linguistic skills before continuing with their education or vocational training. All of the students who apply for tutors are eager to learn and grateful for the extra assistance outside of class that volunteers provide them. Tutors help students with pronunciation, conversation, grammar, spelling, reading comprehension, and writing development. The tutoring sessions are generally driven by the student’s homework or desire to improve a specific English skill.

Description

The Basic and Transitional Studies Division Tutoring Program at Seattle Central College exists to support and empower ESL, Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED students by providing one-on-one tutors to assist these students as they pursue their goals. Our program serves a diverse group of students who speak many different languages and come from many different parts of the world. Our students also come from a variety of educational backgrounds. For some of our students, this may be their first time in a classroom or their first time learning to read or write while others may be returning to school to complete their GED, prepare for college classes or learn English.
