Mission Statement
Better Basics' Mission is to Advance Literacy by Providing Reading Intervention and Enrichment in Public Schools.
Description
Reading Intervention is our core program focusing on struggling first- through fifth-grade readers. This program provides a Better Basics certified teacher to work with small groups or individuals three times per week. Better Basics volunteers work with additional students once per week. The program curriculum and teaching materials are designed to meet needs of the individual and are aligned with both state and national guidelines. Program results indicate a dramatic improvement in our students' reading levels.
The MORE program encourages fourth-grade students to read for pleasure. A child who enjoys reading and reads confidently acquires a love for learning and generally shows improved test scores. This program allows students to read books from the MORE classroom library and complete book reports daily. Volunteers visit weekly to collect the reports, reward students with prize books and other incentives for successful reading, and encourage continued reading. For many children, our prize books are the first books they have ever owned!
Schoolwide Enrichment touches every student in a school with presentations of music, art, drama, science, history, dance and other activities. Through this program, children may experience a professional theatrical production or an exciting science demonstration for the very first time. These experiences extend the walls of the classroom to enrich the students' learning experience, inspire class participation, and create a curiosity about the broader world, as well as increase vocabulary, a critical componant in becoming a successful reader.
Ready 2 Read encourages 2nd grade classrooms to read for pleasure. The classrooms are provided a library of books and a monthly volunteer reads to the children and encourages them to continue reading at school and at home.
