Help newly arrived refugees in Northern Virginia learn to become independent and self-sufficient in their new communities and advocate for their needs. Additionally, because newcomers to our neighborhoods often have multiple health or job interview appointments with local potential employers, we are also looking for volunteers who can assist our clients with transportation to and from their appointments and with any help they may need during appointments, such as filling out paperwork. If you have any additional language skills besides English and interpretation experience, this would be a great opportunity to volunteer your expertise, but it is not required. Most appointments are on weekdays between 8am - 6pm, and volunteers participate based on their individual availability or schedule.

Description
The LSS/NCA Refugee & Immigrant Services program provides support and services including reception, resettlement and employment services for refugees, asylees and victims of human trafficking.

Our current activities include:
Reception and Placement: Currently, we are welcoming refugees from: Burma, Liberia, Iran, Uzbekistan, Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia, Ethiopia, Vietnam, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Early Self-Sufficiency Program: Combines private donations with federal matching funds to provide an alternative to welfare for new arrivals. The goal is to find employment for the refugee as soon as possible.
