ORGANIZATION: Inland Empire United Way

Over the next three years, we have a goal to recruit 1,000 volunteer readers, tutors and mentors for kids in the Inland Empire. At Inland Empire United Way, we are committed to investing in the future self-sufficiency of disadvantaged youth in our community. That’s why we’ve launched Mentor Connection, a collaborative initiative aimed at recruiting, training and mobilizing committed volunteer readers, tutors and mentors to prepare disadvantaged youth to succeed in school and be prepared for future self-sufficiency. Clearly, just one dedicated adult can make a life-changing difference in the life of a disadvantaged youth. Research demonstrates the following benefits of quality mentoring and tutoring programs: Increased school attendance and likelihood to attend college Reduced school drop-out and improved academic skills & performance Enhanced confidence, social attitudes and improved communication skills Reduced negative youth behaviors such as drug and alcohol use Anyone can help! By partnering with quality reading, tutoring and mentoring programs throughout the Inland Empire, we have identified a variety of opportunities to fit any schedule. We need young adults, retirees and professionals to simply give their time to local disadvantaged youth and help them to succeed in school. No experience is required...and many volunteers share that it is the most rewarding thing they’ve ever done.
