Referral: The school district refers students to the NCC program once a student has accumulated several days of unexcused absences. Once referred, the student is scheduled for an NCC appointment by the truancy officer, who sends a letter to the parent with the time and date of the scheduled meeting.
Initial Interview: When the student and parent/guardian(s) attend the initial NCC Intake session, they will meet with a volunteer team. The role of volunteer team is to conduct the intake process, discuss possible reasons for their absents, encourage the student and their family to problem solve and build the student’s motivation. The result is a student-driven "Positive Action Plan" that outlines a strategic path for change and increase student success.
Follow-up: The student is required to follow-up with a Case Manager once a week for a 6-week period. The Case Manager will review the student’s grades and attendance from the school, as well as help to align community and school-based resources as needed.

Mission Statement
The mission of the NCC is to divert students from the Juvenile Justice system by providing them with an opportunity to meet with an "Intake Team" to identify truancy issues and develop a plan to address those issues. These teams consists of two community volunteers, the student and the parent(s)/guardian(s). During the intake process, the volunteers guide the student to assess and discuss the root causes of their truancy issues, identify the people who might support them in their changes, assess any potential roadblocks and establish an affirmative strategy. This strategy is a "Positive Action Plan". The progress of this plan and attendance are reviewed weekly with a Case Manager. The volunteers meet again with the student upon completion of the program to discuss how the plan might be used to achieve success in other areas of their lives, and applied toward future goals.
