The International Institute of Connecticut (IIC) seeks an individual to assist in its Language Services department. Primary functions will include translating documents including birth and marriage certificates, school transcripts and some affidavits. From time to time, the student may be asked to assist with live interpretations on-site or at partner agencies.
LEVEL OF SUPERVISION:
Works under general supervision of the Interpreter/Translation Coordinator, in collaboration with the other program staff. Student must be able to multi-task and work independently.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
The internship is for a minimum of 10 weeks, with preference given to candidates who can work for a 12 weeks to full academic year. Minimum of 10 hours per week. The internship is unpaid. Some travel may be necessary and will be reimbursed as needed.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED
- Fluency in English and proficiency in French & Creole. Proficiency in additional languages desirable.
- Must have excellent communication skills on telephone, via email, and in person.
- Must be capable of working in a multicultural office environment, take initiative, and be able to handle multiple assignments at once and meet deadlines.
- Commitment to the human rights and general welfare of asylum seekers, refugees and immigrants.
- Personal laptop (not required but preferable)
This is an excellent opportunity for someone whose native language is Spanish or for a English speaking native with an advanced knowledge of the Spanish language. All interns are unpaid. Many of our interns receive university credit for their time with the IIConn. IICONN offers a variety of services and programs to achieve its mission, including but not limited to Immigration Counseling, Refugee Resettlement, Employment & Training, assistance to victims of Human Trafficking, Interpreter/Translation Services, Pro Bono Court Representation, English as a Second Language and Community Education & Training. Our targeted client population includes immigrants, refugees, asylees, and victims of human trafficking. In addition, we provide support and services to employers and other community service providers.
