The IICONN volunteers to teach weekly classes in basic English for speakers of other languages and civics instruction. Classes should be fun, interactive - and most importantly, effective. Instructional methods will include lectures, worksheets, games, oral and written quizzes, and role plays. Successful candidates will use an eight-week curriculum specifically to help individuals prepare for and pass the government issued citizenship test and interview.
Positions may also be available for mock interviewers (volunteers who help immigrants practice for their citizenship interviews) are available as well, requiring attendance during class times but no prep time (two to four hours per week). Positions for one-on-one volunteer tutors or English conversation partners may also be available on a case-by-case basis.
Classes will be offered in Bridgeport; Stamford; and Hartford.
KEY REQUIREMENTS:
1) Commitment and reliability - Instructors must be available two evenings per week, for two hours at a time, plus additional time planning lessons and grading assignments (approximately six hours per week). Mock interviewers and individual tutors may contribute two to four hours per week. All volunteers must be able to commit to at least four months, preferably longer.
2) Cultural sensitivity - You should be able to demonstrate sensitivity to individuals from diverse cultures, either through coursework (in anthropology, sociology, international studies, or similar fields) or direct experience.
3) Education - Each instructor or tutor must be currently enrolled in high school or college or have completed a bachelor’s degree. A high school student must have at least a 3.25 overall GPA and at least a B average across English classes. A college student or graduate should be able to prove at least a B average across English and/or education coursework.
4) Languages - Native or near-native proficiency in English required. Spanish competency preferred but not required.
