In addition to our normal services, The Literacy Center offers employment literacy and literature classes in the Coconino County jail through our Partnership for Literacy Rehabilitation (PLR) program. We rely on volunteers, like you, to teach, assess, and report on the progress of our incarcerated learners.
The correlation between education and incarceration is undeniable. According to ProLiteracy, 75 percent of state prison inmates and 59 percent of federal prison inmates did not complete high school or can be classified as low literate. There is strong evidence that participation in educational programs has a lasting impact on inmates. A study by the Federal Bureau of Prisons concluded that "the more actively the inmates successfully participated in prison education programs, the less likely they were to recidivate."
Become one of our specially trained PLR volunteers and be a part of that impact today!
