Books 2 U: Connect Kids with Books!

Are you a natural performer? Do you enjoy telling stories? Become a Books 2 U booktalker and get kids excited about reading books! This highly popular and successful program visits selected schools and presents exciting booktalks to 3rd-, 4th-, or 5th-grade students in Multnomah County. The 66 schools that we serve are specially targeted. Each of the schools receives a visit and new books four times throughout the school year. Most schools are located in East County.

The goal: Get kids excited about reading for fun so they will read when they're not in school! Join our team of Multnomah County Library booktalkers. Give kids a quick preview of entertaining books that leaves them wanting more!

Time Commitment
A school year commitment from October - May is required. Visit schools monthly or every other month and spend 2-3 hours on each visit. Additional time is required to prepare for booktalking.

Location
Most schools are in East Multnomah County - east of 82nd Ave in Portland and in Gresham.
Some schools are in N/NE Portland.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Present entertaining book talks to youth at local area schools
  • Be excited about reading and encourage kids to have fun reading
  • Develop professional relationships with classroom teachers
  • Share information about library services and programs
Skills and Qualifications
  • Ability to speak in front of groups, especially school age children
  • Ability to travel to schools and bring books for the classrooms on your visits
  • Have creative writing skills and ability to memorize work
  • Willingness to prepare booktalks and read youth books
  • Ability to track volunteer time and work independently
  • Ability to develop professional relationship with library and school staff you work with
  • Ability to pass a criminal record check
  • 18 years or older
  • Enjoy reading and have some knowledge of children's books

Benefits
Share your passion for reading and working with youth! This is an opportunity to learn how to booktalk in front of a classroom of kids. Volunteers will learn basic classroom management skills and will develop a better understanding of library services to youth.

Description

Multnomah County Library is the oldest public library west of the Mississippi River, with a history that reaches back to 1864. As Oregon's largest public library, Multnomah County Library serves nearly one-fifth of the state's population with a wide variety of programs and services.

The mission of the volunteer program is to engage community members in enhancing the services that Multnomah County Library is able to provide online, at library locations, and in the community. Volunteers are engaged throughout the organization including at all of our 19 libraries and our outreach programs.
