It seems obvious ... kids need books to learn how to read. Yet, 80% of programs serving kids in need have no age-appropriate books. We know that access to reading material makes the critical difference, but in some of the lowest-income neighborhoods there is only one book for every 300 children.
First Book is a national nonprofit that provides new books to programs and schools serving children in need. By making new, high-quality books available on an ongoing basis, First Book is transforming the lives of children in need and elevating the quality of education.
What We’re Looking For:
We’re looking for passionate, entrepreneurial people to help us get books to kids who need them most. First Book Advisory Boards are energetic groups of people from a professional and cultural cross-section of the community joined together by a love of literacy and a willingness to champion local children. In hundreds of communities across the country, these networks of dedicated volunteers raise funds for local programs and schools to purchase new books to provide to the children they serve.
What We Do:
First Book volunteers create a series of fundraising opportunities to raise funds for books for local programs and schools serving kids in need. If you’re passionate about providing books kids in need, we need your time and talents to:
- raise funds to grant books to more kids
- identify and register programs and schools serving kids in need
- spread the word about First Book in your community; and
- participate in national First Book initiatives and campaigns
First Book-Spokane, an Advisory Board serving the Spokane metro area, is looking for volunteers to join us in our efforts to ensure that all kids in Spokane have access to books.
How to Apply:
