WHAT IS RAISING HOPE

When children are removed from abusive or neglectful homes they often have inadequate, dirty, or stained clothing, and little else. They carry their few belongings in a trash bag. These children deserve more and Raising Hope is here to help!

Raising Hope serves over 4,000 kids of all ages each year. When a child enters a ROOM OF HOPE, they discover a cheerful, store-like room where they can "shop" for clothes, toiletries, shoes, school uniforms, comfort items, and more. Plus, each child is given a brand new duffel bag to carry their belongings in. No more trash bags!

Entering into foster care can be scary and confusing. Raising Hope ensures that each child has clean clothes and other basic items so that they can retain their pride and dignity through a traumatic time.

Eckerd Raising Hope is a program of Eckerd Connects, a locally-based nonprofit organization that has give much-needed second chances to nearly 200,000 children and families since 1968.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

We are currently looking for volunteers that enjoy working independently and in groups. Often you will be the only one (or one of two) present, so this is not ideal for those looking for a social opportunity. Because our Rooms of Hope are set up for emergency services, kids can be removed at any time of day, and it is possible that you might not see children or clients (case managers, child protective investigators, and family support workers) during your shift on many occasions. Retail background is helpful, but not necessary. As a volunteer, your main goals are to keep the Rooms of Hope stocked and organized for easy shopping, and when present, to help children and clients find what they are looking for. From our Largo Room of Hope, which is our clothing hub, you will be sorting donations, fulfilling clothing needs for our other 6 Room of Hope locations, keeping the Rooms happy.

Masks are required. Background checks will be required before you can work independently. Once complete, shifts are flexible and you will be able to move to a different day of the week or pick up different shifts each week through our scheduling app.

NOT INTERESTED IN SOLO WORK BUT STILL WANT TO BE INVOLVED?

You can also reach out to schedule a volunteer group with your friends, school, business, church, or organization to help in the Room of Hope. We schedule groups on Wednesday and Fridays, for 9a-12p or 1p-4p shifts. During these times, our groups are limited to 5 people and we ask that children under 5 stay at home. Masks are required.

We also need advocates in the community. We post regular wishlists/needs on social media (FB and IG @raisinghopefl) and appreciate community drives for clothing and supplies. Please reach out to find out what our current needs are and what we do not accept. You can see the full list at: eckerd.org/raisinghope

Mission Statement

Eckerd Connect's mission is to provide and share solutions that promote the well-being of children and families in need of a second chance. This is driven by our vision of ensuring that each child has the opportunity to succeed, and our belief that all children have the right to grow up safe, healthy, and fulfilled in families that love and nurture them.

Description

Every two minutes, a child is removed from his or her home due to abuse or neglect, often with nothing more than the clothes on their back. Children entering foster care seldom have a toothbrush and many carry the few belongings they have in a garbage bag. But there’s hope for these children in need.

Eckerd Connect’s Raising Hope program provides these children with emergency supplies like clothing and toiletries along with comfort items, like a teddy bear.

Rooms of Hope are set up like stores and are filled with fresh clothing, pajamas, shoes, hygiene items, diapers and other necessities. Children and families are able to "shop" for the items they need all while maintaining a sense of pride and dignity. Rooms of Hope are usually co-located within Eckerd Connects offices or facilities for easier access in emergency situations.
