Description
The Charleston Area Children's Garden Project, a 100% volunteer based project, assists and guides several hundred children per year in growing their own food, teaching health & nutrition, and the science behind it. Edible gardens are built & cultivated on school sites in neighborhoods where crime, drugs, ill health, and poverty are part of everyday life. Obesity, asthma, diabetes, and hypertension are all related to unhealthy food choices and lack of exercise in our SC children. Volunteers work, play, and mentor elementary & middle school-age youth in outdoor classrooms, constructing school gardens together, side by side as a hands-on experience. As role models, volunteers utilize each moment as education for teamwork, perseverance, short & long term goal planning, and personal responsibility & accountability.
