On Monday January 16, 2012 from 10am- 12pm, Thurgood Marshall Academy, located at 2427 Martin Luther King Jr Ave SE, Washington, DC (across the street from the Anacostia metro station), will host a College Scholarship Event open to its graduating seniors. Thurgood Marshall Academy, Washington, DC’s law-themed public charter school, has achieved college acceptance for its first seven graduating classes. In order to make college a reality for its predominately low-income students, Thurgood Marshall Academy provides intensive support during the college financial aid application process. As part of this effort, on Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday volunteers will help seniors complete scholarship applications to support enrollment in post-secondary education.

The mission of Thurgood Marshall Academy Charter High School (TMA) - Washington, D.C.'s law-related college preparatory public charter school - is to prepare high school students to succeed in college and to actively engage in our democratic society. TMA combines a comprehensive, standards-based curriculum with education about law, democracy, and human rights. We strive to create an environment that fosters critical thinking, problem solving, and public advocacy--the foundation of a legal education.

Description

Thurgood Marshall Academy uses proven educational methods that stress excellence in instruction and high expectations for students. Our leagl approach teaches both basic academics and high-order, law-related skills such as using evidence to support and argument, conducting research, synthesizing information, and making presentations. TMA is one of a growing number of innovative schools that measure student understanding not only with traditional tests, buts also via portfolio presentations to panels of teachers, parents, and peers. The school partners with DC area law firms, other businesses, nonprofit organizations, and educational institutions to bring resources, volunteers, and programs to its students.
