Mission Statement

Tovrea Carraro Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed in 2010, located in Phoenix, AZ. Our mission is to provide a unique experience for visitors to Tovrea Castle at Carraro Heights; preserving, maintaining and restoring its historic structures, gardens and grounds, in partnership with the City of Phoenix. We're proud of our association with the City, and equally proud to make the Castle available to the public through our scheduled tours and other programs. Description

Tovrea Castle, the wedding cake shaped Castle that is located on 44 acres near Van Buren and Highway 202, was originally built by Alessio Carraro as a hotel that would be the centerpiece of a luxury housing development.

When the Depression ended this dream, the Castle was purchased by the prominent meatpacking baron, EA Tovrea, and his wife, Della.

The Castle would remain in the Tovrea family until the late 1980’s when the citizens of the City of Phoenix passed the first of 3 bond issues to purchase this much loved landmark.

This Jewel in the Sonoran Desert has been the source of both legend and mystery for several generations of Phoenicians, is a City of Phoenix Point of Pride and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

I have volunteered, as a guide/docent, since May of 2012. As a second generation Arizonan I take great pride in the many diverse sights in my state. The Castle is a very unique part of Phoenix history. The Tovrea Carraro Society has provided comprehensive training in the history of the Castle and insight to being a great tour guide. The Society has also provided opportunities for social interaction between like minded people. I would recommend volunteering for the Tovrea Carraro Society

I am really enjoying my volunteer experience as a Docent with the Tovrea Carraro Society! The training is fantastic, the other volunteers are terrific to work with and get to know and the Castle and Gardens are amazing. Volunteer opportunities abound including giving tours, tending the garden, greeting people in the Visitor Center, working in the Gift Shop...to name a few...You will surely find an area that suits your interests. The Tovrea Carraro Society offers its volunteers the chance to be part of an historic property and share its steep history with the community. Volunteer with us - you'll be glad you did!!
