Mission Statement

2nd Chance 4 Pets was established as a nonprofit in 2003 to reduce the number of pets unnecessarily euthanized due to the death or incapacity of their human companions. We are an all-virtual-volunteer organization. We have no paid staff. Our free resources help pet owners plan for the possibility that their pets might outlive them.

Description

Every hour 575 companion animals are euthanized in shelters across the United States. 2nd Chance 4 Pets, an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization based in Los Gatos, California, intends to decrease this number by educating current and future pet owners how to ensure lifetime care for their pets. 2nd Chance 4 Pets is the first and only organization in the United States that addresses this long, unrecognized issue. Every year, 500,000 companion animals are relinquished and euthanized in shelters due to the death or disability of their human companion. Most of the volunteers with 2nd Chance 4 Pets are virtual; located in different parts of the country and several located in countries outside the US. Our volunteers assist with writing articles for our quarterly newsletter, designing brochures, developing our website, assisting with operations, communicating with pet owners and veterinarians, event planning and fundraising. More information about our organization and our volunteer opportunities can be found at www.2ndchance4pets.org.

2nd Chance 4 Pets is a special non-profit with a unique mission. The director Amy is in touch with me every week, sending new projects for me to work on. I am very satisfied that I am able to use my writing and editing skills for an organization like 2nd Chance.

2nd Chance 4 pets is a great volunteering opportunity for people who really love pets and their well being. Virtual volunteering enables people with busy day-time schedules to still find time to help out and do their part. I worked with Amy and she was great!

I work at an animal shelter. So many animals are brought to us because the owner died or went into assisted living. The family or neighbors bring us pets that were left behind. It breaks my heart. One day a woman called and asked if I knew how she should go about planning for her pet. I had no idea what to suggest. When I came upon 2nd Chance 4 Pets at a conference I was excited to find iformation, GOOD information, to help people plan, and to encourage people to realistically think about the chance that they could outlive their pets. This is so important. These animals come to us frightened and confused. Many become depressed. This organization is the only one I know of that is asking people to plan. And the resources offered on their website are really terrific. I highly recommend 2nd Chance 4 Pets! Naturally, I volunteer my time here as well, and despite a hectic schedule, and being on staff at a shelter, consider it time well spent!

I started volunteering with 2nd Chance 4 Pets several months ago, and the experience has been so fulfilling thus far. With my hectic schedule, it would be nearly impossible to volunteer during working hours, so the virtual aspect of this organization is really great. The other volunteers I have encountered are so passionate, and the love for animals truly pervades everything we do. I look forward to the work, knowing that I'm saving helpless animals and giving them another chance!

This organization brings attention to something that many people never think about - what will happen to their pet if something happens to them? Amy is very dedicated and does a great job of coordinating the volunteers and raising awareness. I have been volunteering for 2nd Chance 4 Pets for about 9 months, and have enjoyed the opportunity. I know the mission of this group is important and I am glad that I can contribute to the cause.

I've been a virtual volunteer for over a year, assisting with editing content for the website and for press releases. Amy is terrific to work with and appreciative of volunteers' efforts. It's a great cause and I like knowing that I'm helping to make a difference in raising awareness of the need for planning for our pets' futures.

With the free time I had on my hands I wanted to volunteer with an organization that provided a service which I feel strongly about. Animals, and assisting to provide them with further shelter for the duration of their time with us, was definitely top of my list. I found 2nd Chance 4 Pets, applied - despite living in the U.K. - and was immediately accepted. This worldwideweb not only offers us the opportunity to communicate with others around the globe, but it can also help great organizations like this to further its work. Over the past year I have worked with the most friendly, easy-going staff, which is always a plus in my books. The requests are never demanding but always rewarding, whether that be to myself, to the animal helped or to the person who we have put into contact with the pet. I'm proud to volunteer for 2nd Chance 4 pets and hope their work continues benefitting our eternal companions

Amy at 2ndChance4Pets has a heart of gold. Her love and devotion to animals is unwavering. 2ndChance4pets is an intelligent, inspiring, and necessary educational achievement for which I am so very proud to serve. Lifetime care after an owner's death or disability is far too often overlooked. Amy has seen to it that as many people as possible consider the future of their pets through 2ndChance4Pets.

As the adoptive mother of a wonderful little creature who’d spent 6 months in her vet’s boarding facility because her owner did not come home from the hospital, I know first-hand the need and the importance of 2nd Chance 4 Pets. I am very glad to have found this organization and this remarkable volunteer opportunity. Though a relatively new volunteer, my interactions with the staff have been exceptional – these caring, dedicated people are working to assure long and secure futures for pets and peace of mind to the humans who love them. As other reviewers have noted, volunteer duties are varied, low pressure, allow for and encourage individual input, and many can be done at home. To anyone who wants to make a difference for pets and feel appreciated and gratified while doing so, I highly recommend volunteering with 2nd Chance 4 Pets.

2nd Chance 4 Pets is a wonderful organization with a mission that I am very passionate about! I have been a volunteer with them since 2009. 2nd Chance gives me the opportunity to volunteer on a number of different and interesting projects from the comfort of my own home. The work is also always very flexible and I can do it when I have the time whether it is during the day or in the middle of the night. If you are looking for a new volunteer opportunity I would definitely recommend 2nd Chance 4 Pets.

I've been volunteering with 2ndChance4Pets since 2007 and it's been one of the best things I've ever done. The team is organized, smart and dedicated to the overall well being of animals. The projects are clearly explained, virtual and have deadlines that are very realistic to meet. I highly recomend this organization to volunteer with and hope others will take the time to give back to the well being and safety of the little animals out there.

I've been a virtual volunteer with 2nd Chance 4 Pets for the past three years. The organization provides a much needed service and makes me feel like I'm helping to make a difference for family pets and their guardians. Amy is delightful to work with, is appreciative and responds quickly to any questions I might have. She always gives me plenty of time to complete a task and I always have the option of saying 'no' to a particular project if I don't think it's right for me or I'm too busy at the moment. I plan on continuing to volunteer with 2nd Chance as long as they need me!

2nd Chance does great work, and they treat their volunteers really well. They always give me tons of time to edit, and they don't mind if I'm busy for a while. Plus, they take my suggestions seriously, they answer my questions when I have them, and they're never critical of the work that I do. I love Amy, and I love volunteering for 2nd Chance because I can contribute to a great cause--on my time.
