Friendship Place Action Network We invite you to join us in coming together as a community and raising our voices against the proposed cuts to services for those experiencing homelessness. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that everyone has access to the support they need. Your participation would mean so much in our fight for a more compassionate society. Our dedicated advocate teams never miss an opportunity to make their voices heard at each important DC Council hearing. They passionately urge our elected officials to prioritize resources towards proven, rapid solutions such as homelessness prevention, rehousing, and job placement. Additionally, they emphasize the vital importance of investing sufficient funds in supportive housing as a means to ultimately end homelessness.

It would be wonderful if we could collaborate and join forces, allowing your dedicated group of volunteers to have meaningful interactions with the participants at Friendship Place. Your support and presence will make a positive impact on their lives. It's important to note that the three city facilities staffed and operated by Friendship Place - LaCasa, The Brooks, and Valley Place - have mandated that all volunteers must comply with the following requirements: 1. Submit to fingerprinting. 2. Schedule and complete a Mandatory Drug and Alcohol Testing (MDAT). 3. Undergo a DC Metropolitan PD Criminal Background Check. 4. Provide Tuberculosis (TB) Test Results dated within the last 12 months. 5. Undergo a Sex Offender Register (SOR) Check. If you are open to meeting these requirements, we would be more than delighted to have a discussion about you or a volunteer group spending some time within our facilities. Group Volunteer Suggestions and Ideas Valley Place - Anacostia Volunteers are needed for the Valley Place resident's farmers market once a month on Thursdays. Tasks include bagging items, labeling, setting up, and providing recipes. The volunteering hours are from 11AM to 2PM. Donate art: Valley Place residents have a fondness for home decor. Consider donating some of your amazing beautiful original artwork that can enhance the aesthetics of their living spaces. Donate houseplants for mental health: Introducing houseplants can contribute to the mental well-being of Valley Place residents. Plants have been known to improve air quality and create a calming environment. Fitness activities outside in the courtyard: Consider organizing yoga or outdoor hula hoop classes to promote physical well-being among the residents. LaCasa - Columbia Heights Craft Group: Organize a craft group once a week at La Casa during the day. Activities such as crocheting or any other tactile activities that involve the use of fingers can be particularly enjoyable and helpful for older folks. Social Interaction: Spend quality time with residents by simply sitting down for a cup of coffee and engaging in meaningful conversations. This can provide companionship and brighten their day.As for availability, Thursday during the day might not work, but Tuesday and Wednesday would likely be the best days to volunteer your time at La Casa. Decorating the lobby at La Casa for holidays and seasons is a wonderful way to create a welcoming and festive atmosphere for residents. From vibrant floral arrangements to themed ornaments and lighting, there are endless possibilities to make the lobby at La Casa shine throughout the year. There are opportunities available for hair stylists or volunteers from beautician schools to provide haircuts and styling services to the residents.

The LGBTQ+ Work Group is an advocacy group dedicated to promoting full LGBTQ+ inclusion in our workforce and society at large, with a particular focus on addressing LGBTQ+ youth homelessness. We are currently seeking a dedicated and passionate volunteer to join our team and take on the crucial role of Grant Research and Application. As a volunteer in this position, you will play a key role in helping us secure grant funding for our community outreach initiatives. Responsibilities: 1. Conduct thorough research to identify potential grants that align with the goals and initiatives of the LGBTQ+ Work Group. 2. Assist in the preparation and submission of grant applications on behalf of Friendship Place. 3. Collaborate with the LGBTQ+ Work Group to understand the specific needs and goals of our community outreach initiatives. 4. Maintain accurate records of grant opportunities, application deadlines, and submission progress. Qualifications: - Prior experience in grant writing. This can include successfully securing grants, understanding different proposal formats, and familiarity with various funding sources. - Strong research and analytical skills. - Excellent written communication skills. - Passion for LGBTQ+ inclusion and advocacy. - Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team. Time Commitment: This is an unpaid volunteer position with a flexible time commitment. We appreciate any amount of time you can dedicate to support our cause. Friendship Place's Welcome Center is seeking dedicated and compassionate volunteers to support various crucial areas within our organization. As a volunteer at our Welcome Center, you will have the opportunity to assist in our mail room, answer the front desk phone, and engage in other essential roles that contribute to the well-being of our guests. **Volunteer Roles:** **Mail Room Support:** Help us manage and organize incoming and outgoing mail. Your assistance will ensure that our guests receive important communication and support services promptly. **Front Desk Phone Operator:** Be the friendly and helpful voice that greets our guests over the phone. You will provide essential information, direct calls, and offer a warm welcome to everyone who contacts the Welcome Center. **Friday Afternoon Drop-in Reset:** Assist in preparing the Drop-in area for Monday services. This role involves setting up the space, organizing materials, and ensuring a welcoming environment for our guests. We are looking for either one dedicated volunteer or a rotation of two volunteers. **Snack Bag Construction:** Join a team of 2-3 volunteers to build snack bags for our Drop-in program. These snack bags are essential for providing nourishment to those we serve. **Spanish Language Support/Vital Document Assistance:** With a growing need for vital document assistance to migrants and individuals who primarily speak Spanish, we are seeking 1-2 volunteers who can help with completing vital document referrals. Fluency in Spanish is necessary for this role. **Before Thirty Group Opportunities:** Join us in coordinating group activities through Before Thirty. These events occur every 4-6 weeks and last about 4 hours. Volunteers are needed to help with material coordination, set-up/clean-up, and participant sign-in. We are looking for 2-4 volunteers for this exciting initiative. **Volunteer Shifts:** You can volunteer during any of the following days and times of operation: - Monday: 9am-12pm, 1-4pm - Tuesday: 9am-12pm, 1-4pm - Thursday: 9am-12pm, 1-4pm **How to Apply:** If you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities, please reply today!
