Have you ever wondered how stories get into the newspaper or get featured in radio or TV news? Most often, a group or company that has a story to tell actually calls the newspaper or station to pitch their issue. With any luck, the reporter will then come to the event, interview a spokesperson and write a story or print a quote that gets shared with readers or viewers.

In order to reach the right reporter, the group or company must have an updated list of reporter names, phone and fax numbers and even email addresses. The challenge is that it is time consuming and expensive to keep a list of reporter contact information up to date. Groups may spend hours a week or even have a dedicated staff member to verifying this type of information.

This volunteer system is designed to help groups by asking volunteers working together all around the country to verify bits of media contact information by using the Internet and a phone.
