Location:

117 East 118th Street, New York, NY 10035, US

Mission Statement

STEPS' mission is to prevent homelessness by enabling adults at risk to become economically self-sufficient. STEPS provides education and training related to academic skills, employment readiness and job related skills, parenting skills and family literacy skills.

Description

STEPS annually works with over 250 adults over 16 years of age from East Harlem and other impoverished communities around NYC. Students are referred to STEPS by welfare offices, parole officers, residential substance abuse programs, shelters and other programs serving the very poor. STEPS offers its programs during the day year round, Monday through Friday. Evening and Saturday classes are planned for the fall of 2001. Programs currently offered include: Adult Basic Education - for all skill levels, including preparation for the GED; Employment Program - for those with and without work experience. Program includes pre-employment training, career awareness, resume preparation, interview and job search strategies, work internships, job placement assistance and job retention counseling; Family Literacy - which supports the skills being learned by adults while teaching adults ways to encourage their children's learning. Special emphasis is placed on children's books and home activities; Parenting program which provides inexperienced and separated parents knowledge of child development issues and peer support for problems that can stress or fracture family ties; All programs underscore life skills needed to manage daily living, such as nutrition, health and community services. STEPS is a 21 year old community based organization, which began as an outreach program of the Bank Street College of Education. In 1986 STEPS moved to the Mayor's Office for Youth Services where it continued its direct services and provided training in competency based education to public schools and community colleges. It incorporated in 1989 as a not for profit. STEPS is governed by a Board of Directors, led by Milton J. Little, CEO and CFO of the National Urban League. The organization receives its funding from a mix of federal, state and city grants, as well as from contributions from foundations, corporations and individuals.
