Mayor Buddy's Book Club

Volunteers will increase literacy creative expression with a group of fifth through eighth grade students by facilitating weekly after-school book clubs that encourages leisure time reading that ultimately prepares them for academic success.

Benefits to the Volunteer:

  • Volunteers will gain valuable experience working with Mayor Buddy’s Book Club and can strengthen their resume
  • Volunteers will gain mentoring and leadership experience
  • Volunteers will increase their awareness of the need for improved student literacy

Qualifications:

  • Reliable transportation
  • Must be comfortable leading discussions and activities with a group of students
  • Must be passionate about reading
  • Must be comfortable working with students 8-14 years old
  • Attend volunteer orientation/training
  • Must be of 18 years of age and over
  • Must pass criminal background check

Description

Through ORLANDO CARES, we engage volunteers in 6 unique programs that help Central Florida youth improve their academic success, increase their literacy skills, plan viable career choices and avoid the juvenile justice system. ORLANDO CARES created volunteer opportunities that impact educational outcomes and contribute to the well-being of our community.

Orlando Cares volunteers must be 18 years or older to volunteer, fill out a City of Orlando volunteer application, and attend a one-hour training session to be scheduled with a Volunteer Coordinator.
