Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program
People helping people - tax return preparation assistance and financial education - to keep more of their hard-earned dollars in their pockets at tax time.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, our service models have been modified to protect the health and safety of our clients and volunteers. More information is available on our websites, vitaloveland.org and makechangenoco.org.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program in the Fort Collins Area needs volunteers to prepare taxes, provide site support, and translation assistance. Training is provided, no experience needed.

Tax Preparers: While some volunteers have experience in accounting or tax law, everyone is welcome. Our comprehensive training program using IRS certification focuses on individual taxes for low-income and elderly filers.

Site Support: It takes more than volunteer tax preparers to keep our sites running. Volunteer to greet and orient clients or to provide administrative and operational support at a tax site.

Translators: Volunteers needed with Spanish language expertise. Assist tax preparers in collecting required information and clarifying questions related to tax return preparation and explanation of the results. About VITA - Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

N/A, Fort Collins, CO 80525, US

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide free income tax return preparation assistance year-round, for people whose income level, age or disability makes it unnecessary or impractical to seek paid professional assistance.

Description

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program has been in existence for 50 years, offering free tax help to people who cannot afford professional assistance. VITA volunteers help prepare tax returns for taxpayers with disabilities, those with low- to moderate-income, the homebound, non-English speaking persons and the elderly.

Volunteers come from all backgrounds and undergo a comprehensive training program. Tax preparers must pass annual certifying exams to prove their understanding of relevant tax laws and proficiency of e-filing and tax preparation methods using IRS-approved software.

Volunteers may work at established sites in Fort Collins and Windsor and at "mobile" sites within Larimer and Weld counties.
