CITY OF CHICAGO: We're looking for one additional WEEKDAY EVENING volunteer to add to the Open Heart Magic Bedside Magic and Share the Magic Program for BI-WEEKLY SERVICE (every other week) at a hospital in the city of Chicago. This amazingly rewarding position as a Open Heart Magic volunteer Hospital Magician will allow you to learn and use close-up magic to inspire and empower kids and teens in pediatric units in hospitals and brighten their days, create wonder and laughter. Imagine being able to help make a child or teen, even those unable to leave their beds, experience a miracle at his or her hospital bedside. Imagine being able to reach kids that turn away other visitors and impact even those with a long term illness.

We'll teach you everything - we're just looking for committed, outgoing individuals with a sense of humor who want to help kids and teens at a hospital. Once you are trained and have started performing, you will have the opportunity to immediately see how your service positively affects someone's life as you bring laughter, surprise, and astonishment to kids in hospitals. You will learn to use professional level magic that has been recreated to be interactive having the magic occur in the hands of the patients and participatory to make the interaction more engaging, meaningful and empowering to the children. You will be also taught how to empower kids in a hospital environment by using these magic and engagement techniques to bring them out of the fear and isolation that can occur from a long or short-term illness or traumatic situation.

This is not "clown like" birthday party magic. It's the old Chicago art of close-up magic and sleight of hand that is extremely visual and astonishing and particularly powerful and unique in a hospital environment. Because of our experience training magicians, you will be able to learn how to perform such in a shorter time horizon. In this work, you will be able to mix close-up magic therapy with your imagination, performance ability and social skills to build suspense, create laughter and add energy and excitement to each child's hospital stay. Even though your work will be focused on helping children, you will also have the opportunity to do magic with teens, and adults as well as anyone who may need a little magic in the hospital including patients' parents, friends, nurses and hospital staff members. You will be provided with and required to participate in on-going training, information sharing, and presentation practice with the support of other Open Heart Magic volunteers through your attendance at monthly meetings. Your attendance at these monthly meetings is required so you can learn new techniques and become better at helping kids. Aside from your close-up magic and child therapy training, you will also receive instruction on hospital processes and requirements so you are familiar with a new environment.
