Music soothes and moves us during our most trying times. Hospice families and patients find themselves in the midst of fearful, stressful, and confusing decisions and dilemmas. Often times patients no longer recognize their loved ones, behave differently than before, or withdraw. Some patients have no families at all.
When musicians and singers visits these patients and families, those that haven't spoken in months find their voice to sing along, make social connections like they haven't in years- and (most heartwarmingly) smile again. Hearing is also the sense that lasts the longest for patients. Even if patients cannot see or speak, the sound of music and singing makes its way through when nothing else can.
If you have musical skills and can spare about two hours total once a week, you can make a difference for your community! There is no place filled with more love and care than hospice. Volunteers never provide physical care, and you will bring smiles and happiness to those whose lives you touch. Please reach out if you think you can help or have questions.
