Key Duties/Responsibilities:

The UDC Institute of Gerontology is seeking volunteers that are bilingual in English and either Cantonese or Mandarin to support their Respite Aide Program for senior citizens in Washington DC. Volunteers will work closely with the Respite Aide Project Coordinator in the Institute of Gerontology during site visits with program volunteers and clients that speak Cantonese or Mandarin. Volunteers will provide interpretation during these sites visits. This will include communicating information, asking questions, and dealing with confidential information. Volunteers will need to sign a confidentiality agreement.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing in English and either Mandarin or Cantonese (i.e. experience as an interpreter, native speaker, or several years speaking)
  • Prior experience as an interpreter or translator preferred, but not required
  • Experience or interest in working with senior citizens
  • Ability to following standard operating procedures

Physical/Age Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must undergo a background check
  • Comfortable working with senior citizens

Time Commitment/Reporting:

  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Reports to the Respite Aide Project Coordinator
  • Site visits take place every 3 months and consist of 2 half/full days of site visits (8-12 hours/week)

Locations:

  • Various sites in Washington DC (homes of program volunteers/clients). Volunteers and the Respite Aide/Bodywise Project Coordinator would be taking public transportation between the sites.
