A Medical Student Opportunity in Hospice

Heartland Hospice is looking for nursing students and premed students who are interested in expanding their knowledge of death and dying. By coming along side of a dying patient, you will experience the needs, desires and the satisfaction of supporting someone who has only a few days or months to live. The unscripted experience of witnessing someone's death can be a lesson for our own life choices and personal growth. Ultimately understanding the meaning of 'a good death' and 'a life well spent' will provide a platform for addressing patient need as your career unfolds.

This opportunity is in the role of a 'friendly visitor' with no 'hands on care'. Hospice volunteers do not make judgments nor do volunteers offer advice. A volunteer's role is to be an extra layer of social support to the patient and/or their family.

Hospice is regulated by Medicare. There is a required training of 14 hours. Training dates are flexible to accommodate volunteer schedules.

Volunteers state that they get more out of their experiences than they feel they give. Patients and families state that they are so grateful for the support of their hospice team and especially their volunteer!

Volunteers ARE the heart of hospice.
