Ombudsman:A Funny-Sounding Word for a Valued Volunteer!
Do you care about protecting the rights of older adults and the disabled? The Long-term Care Ombudsman Program needs volunteers to serve as advocates for residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilites. Volunteer hours are flexible, and no prior experience is required.
Volunteers Ombudsman will...
- Visit residents at an assigned facility
- Listen to and advocate
- Protect resident health, safety, welfare and rights.
- Respect resident confidentiality.
- Address concerns.
Help advocate for optimal quality of life and quality of care for older adults living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Mission Statement
The Harris County Long-term Care Ombudsman Program advocates for optimal quality of life and quality of care for residents in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Residents and their families are served by developing and using the talents and efforts of specially trained volunteers and paid staff to represent the interests of residents who live in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
Description
The Long-Term Care (LTC) Ombudsman Program is federally mandated under the 1978 amendments to the Older Americans Act. The Program helps residents, family, and staff achieve the best possible quality of life in Texas LTC facilities.
It is also a helpful source of information about choosing a long-term care facility. It provides information on resident's rights, eligibility criteria, and other services for the elderly.
