Are you passionate about education and want to serve as a role model? Children experiencing homelessness need extra time and attention to succeed in school. We train and match our volunteer tutors with students in their community who then meet weekly to focus on learning. You can specify to work one-on-one with an elementary, middle or high school student or even meet your student virtually! Most tutoring takes place in the afternoon to early evening hours.
Based in Southern California, School on Wheels provides academic tutoring to children living in shelters, motels, cars, group foster homes and on the streets. We provide students without a home stability in a time of stress and transition and help them achieve educational success so that they may break the cycle of homelessness and poverty.
Volunteers are asked to commit 1 hour a week for a year, tutoring usually happens on weekdays between 3pm-7pm.
No experience is necessary - we provide training. The first step to becoming a tutor is to watch a 2-minute orientation video before completing an application. Watch our video here: http://bit.ly/SOWVolunteerMatch
