Quality of care is one of the cornerstones of our mission - a mission that could not be accomplished without the many 'helping hands' of our volunteers. We are seeking licensed cosmetologists and barbers who are interested in providing in-home haircuts to our patients. When facing the end of life, maintaining one's dignity and sense of being oneself are imperative. Providing a haircut to a patient who cannot leave his or her home is a treasured gift to both the patient and their family.

Our patients reside in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, St Clair, and surrounding counties. Visits take place in patients' own homes, as well as nursing homes, assisted living, memory care, group homes, and hospitals. Our hospice volunteers have shared that they find their work to be personally gratifying and meaningful, and we hope that you will share in this experience.

Volunteers will be provided with ongoing one-on-one staff support throughout their service with us, and will be invited to ongoing education opportunities, and appreciation events. Our volunteers must complete an online application, interview, background checks, an orientation class, fingerprinting, and annual TB testing, and provide a copy of current licensure. Haircut frequency can range from 1-2 per month, or every few months.

Hospice of Michigan requires that any person who has suffered a personal loss wait a period of 12 months prior to volunteering. Thank you for considering this enriching and unique volunteer opportunity.

Description

What sets us apart

Our staff - Our dedicated doctors, nurses, social workers, counselors and hospice aides form a "cocoon of care" around our patients and families, providing comfort, support and dignity.

Our expertise - Because we are one of the largest hospices in the nation, we have specialists in many areas, including pediatric hospice, pain management, research and care for people with advanced dementia and other illnesses.

Our experience - We have been serving our communities for more than 30 years. Among our 600 employees, we have more board-certified hospice physicians and nurses than other hospices.

Our locations - We have offices and worksites throughout the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Wherever you are, we have a team of hospice specialists who can help you.

Our commitment - We care for all who need and seek our care, regardless of their age, diagnosis or ability to pay. We are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for our patients and families and for admissions.

Our size - We serve nearly 800 patients and their families every day; nearly one in four hospice patients in Michigan.
