Just Say YES to Reading Volunteer- Barnes & Noble

In our commitment to Just Say YES! to Youth all across Georgia- It is our pledge to ensure that by 2020, all children in Georgia will be on a path to reading proficiently by the end of 3rd grade as a Get Georgia Reading Partner.

During our Storytime-N-Pop summer reading program, Metamorphasis Powerhouse Company in partnership with Barnes & Noble, Morrow GA is seeking volunteers to help read to children PK-3rd grade during our Learning Lab activity. Throughout the morning, kid authors share their written stories from their own books to students in a peer-led reading activity. Participants then read excerpts from the book, practice vocabulary words, and practice writing their own stories while enjoying a snack of popcorn and juice.

During our Just Say YES to Reading programs, our volunteers help close the gaps of access to historically under-served communities by turning everyday places into public learning classrooms- to increase:

- Language Nutrition

- Access to Books

- Positive Learning Climate

- Teacher Preparedness

As a Storytime-N-Pop Reader, you will bring your enthusiasm, passion, and love of reading to on-site locations like our library partners, Barnes & Nobles, Recreation Centers, and more to inspire youth to immerse themselves in a story while increasing their vocabulary, diction, and sight words as we propel them into becoming life-long readers and learners.

Why you should become a Storytime-N-Pop Volunteer with MetIncPowerCo:

The First major milestone for any child's success in education is the ability to read by the end of 3rd grade.

Right now, only 34% of Georgia's third graders are reading proficiently by the end of the school year. This means 2 out of every 3 third graders cannot read proficiently in Georgia.

Why does this matter? Because third grade is when children make the shift from learning to read to reading to learn. And if they cannot read, they won't be able to understand nearly half of the fourth-grade curriculum. As a result, these children fall even farther behind in school.

You can help us change that trajectory with your commitment of consistency as we engage children through fun-spirited stories, story project-based learning activities, and resources that help support them both at home and in-school.

Storytime-N-Pop volunteer opportunities are available both as an on-site partnership and virtual. All volunteers must be 18 years of age, preferably with experience working with Early Education audiences. ESOL/ESL and SOUNS experience an added plus!

Volunteers must complete a background check and organization orientation prior to working with students.

This opportunity is available across the following counties:
