Originally from the south, Mr. J lives alone near the Junction in West Seattle. Even with lots of neighbors, he is isolated in his one bedroom apartment. His only visitor is his mother, who is his primary care giver, and who has to work part time to make ends meet. She has cared for him his whole life and struggles to meet all of his needs with no one else to call on for support. Mr. J needs help with weekly laundry (2 loads), housework, and grocery shopping. He uses a motorized wheelchair and suffers from a number of chronic diseases that make it hard to move around and cause pain. Mr J craves companionship, and would welcome a visitor as much for the company as for the help with housework.
Volunteer Services assists low-income older adults and persons living with disabilities. Volunteers can provide assistance with light housecleaning, transportation, grocery shopping, home repair and yard care. With a little help from volunteers, clients can continue to live independently in their homes.
Time and location are very flexible; you can volunteer in your own neighborhood at on days that work for you, at times and frequency that fit your schedule. You are provided with an orientation and ongoing staff support.
