Low income seniors and homeowners with disabilities sometimes receive Health Department citations for issues that they just don't have money to fix. These folks are often confused and scared by the situation and need help to work through it. We need volunteers who can work with them to understand the issues and understand what they can do to resolve it. NeighborLink does the actual repair/clean up work but that's not enough.

Volunteers work with an experienced case worker until you're comfortable. Activities involve working with the homeowner, the Health Department (they love you, really), the NeighborLink workers, with other agencies around town who also help, with volunteer lawyers, and anyone who gets involved to help the homeowner. You coordinate activities and help the senior through a scary experience.

Objective: resolve the citation and get the homeowner any help they need going forward.

Time Committment: as much or as little as you choose. If you only help one senior we would be grateful. If you work a regular schedule helping many homeowners, that would be great. It's up to you. Almost all work can be done over the phone from your home, but ussually an initial visit to the home with NeighborLink personnel is helpful.

Mission Statement

NeighborLink Indianapolis mission is to help older adults and individuals with disabilities who own their own homes age in place safely and with dignity. We do this by providing home repair at no cost to the homeowner.

Description

We focus on home repairs that enable the homeowner to age in place safely, stabilize the home for years to come, and provide an improved appearance for the neighborhood at large. Many of the repairs we provide would be able to be done by the homeowner if they had the means or physical ability. By using volunteers we are able to help the homeowner as well as provide that intimate experience of truly being the hands and able-body for someone else.

Most older adults want to age in the most affordable home-the one they own. Aging in place allows older adults some level of autonomy and dignity over their own health and decisions. It allows many to remain within communities they’ve been a part of for decades. Social determinants of health, particularly including the ability to keep their home safe and accommodating to their physical needs, are among some of the most challenging barriers to aging in place.
