We always welcome groups to come volunteer at ForKids! Here are the main areas where your group can help:

Landscaping: (April-October) Help keep our properties beautiful! Your group can landscape at one of our Norfolk locations or at our Chesapeake services facility. Landscaping usually involves mowing, weeding, trimming, planting, litter pick-up, outdoor painting, outdoor cleaning, and other outdoor maintenance items. If you are interested in a landscaping project, contact me with your preferred dates and times, number of volunteers, and approximate age group if they are minors. Please keep in mind that this opportunity is only available Monday-Friday weekly, during normal business hours.

Shelter Deep-Cleaning: Haven House is ForKids' emergency family shelter. Located in the Ocean View area of Norfolk, the shelter has been in operation almost 30 years and is home to approximately 10 families at all times. Your group can help by deep cleaning the shared spaces in the shelter, as well as in the services building next door. This includes sweeping, mopping, kitchen detailing, bathroom detailing, and even some lawn care. Keeping our shelter clean helps our families feel less stressed, and maintain better health! If you are interested in helping clean our shelter, contact me with your preferred dates and times, number of volunteers, and approximate age group if they are minors. Cleaning shifts can be scheduled any weekday, and some limited hours on Saturdays and Sundays. This project is only needed 2x per month, and fills up fast, so please keep in mind you may have to schedule some weeks in advance for this opportunity.

Good Mojo Thrift Store: Our thrift store benefits our families! Good Mojo is opened to the public and our families also shop at the store using vouchers they receive during program participation. Your group volunteer project would consist of donation sorting, organizing, hanging, light lifting and heavy lifting for those who are able. If you are interested in a Good Mojo project, please call me directly. Be sure to include your preferred dates and times, number of volunteers, and approximate age group if they are minors. Please keep in mind that Monday-Friday projects are our first choice and are easiest to organize. Saturday and Sunday projects can be arranged on a limited basis, with a few weeks advance-notice minimum.

Supply Drive/Fundraiser: This is a really fun thing for groups to do and it really helps our families! Your group can organize a supply drive or special event fundraiser and collect items or funds for ForKids. How you collect the items/funds is up to you! On our website, we have a list of recommended supply drives and items you can collect. There are also fliers that you can print and give out at: http://www.forkidsva.org/get_involved/supplydrives.html. If you are interested in holding a supply drive or a fundraiser, please contact our Special Projects Manager, Rachel, at rnewnam@forkidsva.org or by calling 757-622-6400 ext. 113. Our needs change with the seasons, but right now our biggest needs are cleaning supplies, after-school snacks, and Thanksgiving food items.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please register on this site and I will contact you directly to schedule your shift, confirm number of volunteers, and answer any questions you may have. You can also contact me directly at volunteer@forkidsva.org.
