Compassionate Volunteers Needed Now at Roper Hospice Cottage
Roper Hospice is currently recruiting volunteers for our hospice inpatient unit. Those chosen to be Cottage volunteers are special individuals who will provide support to patients, their loved ones, and our staff. Our volunteers are an important part of the hospice experience for a patient and their loved ones, and are beloved members of the hospice team. We are looking for responsible individuals who must be good listeners and be willing to interact with patients and families during a difficult period in their lives. Cottage volunteers must be able to give four hours a week, and must complete the Roper Hospice on-boarding process.
Volunteer with an Award-Winning Nonprofit
Roper Hospice is part of the acclaimed Roper St. Francis Healthcare network, and is the only hospice in the Tri-County associated with a hospital. Roper Hospitals, Roper Hospice, and our Cottage are nonprofits which provide care to all. Our bottom line is patient care and we are committed to compassion and excellence in everything we do.
Roper Hospice's Next Volunteer Training is Oct. 30, Nov. 1, and Nov. 2.
Our next hospice volunteer training will take place over three days at Roper Hospital in downtown Charleston: Wednesday, October 30 from 5:30pm to 9:30pm; Friday, November 1 from 8:30am to 5:00pm; and Saturday, November 2 from 8:30am to 5:00pm. Attendance at all three days is required.
During the training, you will examine your experiences with death, loss, and grief, and will explore your feelings and beliefs about end of life. You will learn about our team approach, the medical perspective of hospice, and how to have good self-care and prevent burnout. Communication skills and healthy boundaries will be an important focus. A team of hospice professionals will be on hand to educate you about their roles and how you will interact with them.
Getting Started
The first step to become a Roper Hospice volunteer is a phone interview, followed by an in-person interview. A background check and health screen will follow; a urine drug screen, TB test, and flu shot are required. Volunteers must be 18 years of age, have their own transportation, and be able to give four hours a week. We regret we are unable to accommodate community service hours. Please call 843-906-1828 to learn more or begin the process. I look forward to hearing from you!
Warmly,
Laurie Beckman
