Volunteer Position:

Memories in the Making(r)Volunteer Art Facilitator

Time Commitment:

2.5 hours per week for an eight week session - eight-week sessions are repeated four times a year

Description:

The Memories in the Making(r)(MIM) Volunteer Art Facilitator is specially trained to facilitate a MIM group in the community program and/or in care communities. MIM is a unique fine arts program for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and is endorsed by the Alzheimer’s Association. The program’s creative process provides a safe and validating environment for artistic expression, resulting in a creative and non-verbal way to communicate and capture precious moments through art. The Memories in the Making(r) program is more than a traditional arts and crafts class or hobby activity, it has been proven to be beneficial and therapeutic and can stimulate the brain of persons with dementia. In this group the creative process and the stories that evolve through it are as important and meaningful as the art work itself.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Background or interest in working with people with various types of dementia
  • Background or strong interest in art with a willingness to learn
  • Ability to attend a half-day training in MIM techniques/ protocols offered by Alzheimer’s Association staff

From its offices in Portland, Bend and Medford, the Oregon Chapter provides education and support for people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, as well as their families and caregivers. In addition, it offers local support groups, early-stage engagement programs, community education classes and a 24/7 Helpline (800-272-3900).
