Volunteers are the heart of hospice and play a vital role in the total care of the patient, with the assistance of the interdisciplinary team. This team consists of nurses, hospice aides, social workers, chaplains, and the bereavement coordinators & volunteers!
Gateway staff and volunteers enable patients and family members to embrace life to the fullest extent. In the comfort of a patient's residence, whether in a home or in a facility, volunteers offer a listening ear or a gentle hand to enhance the well-being of patients. They also render critical support "behind the scenes."
Volunteer Opportunities:
Patient and Family Support- Friendly visitors provide socialization- perhaps by reading aloud, playing cards, praying, singing songs, or sharing reminiscences. The offer relief-sitting for caregivers and pet therapy.
Caring Companion- Companion volunteers offer additional support when family members are out of the area and a patient had expressed concern over dying alone, or when a patient has a change in location or condition. These volunteers are critical to impacting the quality of life to those we serve.
Special Projects/Special Events- Deliver flowers to patients. Creative volunteers make crafts, greeting cards, or lap blankets for patients. Participate in events such as our memorial services.
Community Education- These volunteers distribute flyers during community outings and senior fairs, as well as provide information and presentations to civic organizations.
Office Support- Clerical volunteers answer the telephone, make photocopies, file documents, or prepare bulk mailings.
We are looking for volunteers all over the Greater Pittsburgh Region- including Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Washington & Westmoreland counties. Gateway will work with you to find your specific volunteer talents and interests.
Training is provided.
